Native American Beaded Earrings Workshop

Welcome to the Native American beadwork experience, where you will design and create your own earrings using a traditional style of beadwork formally known as Comanche Stitch, or Brick Stitch. You can join this workshop without prior knowledge or familiarity with beading.

Course is led by Lakota Longwalker, multi-instrumentalist, composer, stone sculptor, Native flute maker, beaded jewelry artisan and teacher based in Helsinki, Finland. Longwalker's nationality is Tsalagi (Cherokee) nation.

Comanche stitch was created, and shared by the Comanche people (Nūmū Tekwapū) whose original homelands encompassed land bases in what would become the states of Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma. Their language is an Uto-Aztecan tongue of the Athabaskan speaking people.

Their numbers have been reduced from 2-3 million, to only 15,100 today, and only 30 still speak the language.

Each bead is added one at a time in a stacked process analogous to making a brick wall. Many design options exist within the basic structure. Several colors will be available from primary colors to pastels, choice is up to the participant.

The rewards of using this style of beadwork are, creating functional, wearable art in a fun, relaxing, and mindful way alone or in groups.

Native American Flute Creation Workshop

Native American Flute Creation Workshop in Kosmos Festival (FI) 2023.

Students will learn Tsalagi (Cherokee) style Native Flute creation and how to tune each note individually in order to produce agreeable melodies.

Learning how to make this style of  flute will connect one to nature, inviting its creator to bring the flute into the woods to sing with bird song, the sound of  wind, water, wildlife, the source of all music.

Connections to  distant cultures, and music can be felt, and understood  through the  flute’s universal type of tone production, and available scales/modes, enabling its maker  to  learn and create music from cultures found on every continent.

All materials/tools will be provided, each student will be able to make their own handcrafted flute (from PVC) within the workshop’s time limit, learn a new skill that can be applied to the construction of flutes from cultures around the world. Each student will have the choice to make a right, or left handed flute. The cultural significance of this type of flute, and its connection to nature, will be discussed in addition to the demonstration of traditional flute songs, and a briefing on music theory for this style of traditional flute.

Course is led by Lakota Longwalker, multi-instrumentalist, composer, stone sculptor, Native flute maker, beaded jewelry artisan and teacher based in Helsinki, Finland. Longwalker's nationality is Tsalagi (Cherokee) nation.
