Lakota style love flutes
are the most commonly sought style. This type of flute is played vertically with 5-7 sound holes, traditionally played by males, to court females. This type of flute is indigenous to North America Native culture exclusively.
In contemporary culture, Lakota love flutes are extremely versatile and have been integrated into almost every music genre, including modern Classical, Jazz, Hip Hop, Guided Meditations, and Nordic Folk. This broad appeal creates an almost limitless amount of potential customers, and specific commissions to compliment various ensembles.
Cherokee style love flutes
are played horizontally and have the same traditions, and amount of sound holes as the Lakota Love Flutes. This type of flute is not as popular as the Lakota style, however, there are two factors that accord them broad appeal, Cherokee Love Flutes are similar to Japanese Shakuhachis, and Northern European transverse flutes making them more familiar to Non-Native American people, they also take far less time to make, and can be sold for costs well below those of a Lakota Love Flute.
The music that I compose for these two styles of flute reflects the cosmopolitan nature of both, with some of the compositions consisting of traditional solo flute exclusively, while other songs integrate these styles of flute into contemporary Native Folk Rock.
